Gloucestershire's Barnsley is situated on the A433 Cirencester to Bibury road. Its straggling street plan shows how it grew due to its position on a popular trade route, the old Welsh Way, a track over the wolds used by the Welsh cattle drovers going to London. The most famous attraction just south of the village is Barnsley House, an attractive and substantial 17th-century Georgian mansion with a wonderful garden containing numerous rare shrubs, a Gothic summerhouse and temple. Another attraction is the 18th-century baroque mansion Barnsley Park.
