.
He was at sea when the Second World War broke out in April 1940, and he served on board ships managed by Notraship (Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission) until August 1944.  Although it looks like he spent most of his time around the UK coastal routes, he appears to have sailed every sea during the war. Documented trips include at journey to Reykjavik on 24th July 1942 while sailing onboard the BESTUM (the code letters for convoys from UK to Reykjavik was U.R. and returning convoys were given the code R.U.).  Magne was also onboard ships to and from Algiers in 1943/44.

Can you identify this for me?

On 13th June 1947 he was awarded the Norwegian War Medal 'Krigsmedaljen' for service on Norwegian ships during WWII. For his contribution to the defence of Norway he was also awarded the 'Deltakermedaljen' or Participation Medal (awarded in 1981), Magne was also given a medal from his Veterans Association. At one point he served on Norwegian ships for 325 days, i.e. 54 working weeks without holiday. He was very lucky to survive his time at sea. Between April 1940 and August 1944 almost 3000 Norwegian seamen lost their lives, nearly one-tenth of those who chose to serve on the ships managed by Notraship. About 500 of the 1081 ships were lost. One of the ships Magne served on, the s/s Rimfakse, was sunk just 11 days after he disembarked at Blyth. His wartime seaman's registration number in the Directorate for Seamen is 12561.
.
His passport claims that he first arrived in the UK on 10th September 1941. His restrictions on stay in the UK were removed on 5th November 1962.
Magne married Marta Oline Paulsdatter Teisnes (born 24th June 1920) in Bekkjarvik, Norway on 23rd January 1940 (his bestman was his brother Oskar).
He had two sons to Cora Moore (nee. Clarke) - George Magne Dypevåg born 16th Feb. 1943 and Monrad William Dypevaag born 12th Jun. 1946.
Magne was not granted a divorce from Marta until 7th June 1950 (in Bergen). He then married Cora (28 Dec 1914 - 15 Jan 1983) on 15th January 1951 in Newcastle Register Office.
Magne died after a short illness aged 84 at his home, 21 Cochrane Court, Benwell, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on 21st April 1996. He was cremated at the West Road Crematorium, Newcastle on 26th April 1996 and interred with his brothers Trygve and Monrad in Vinnesvåg, Austevoll, Norway on 12th July 1996.
* Magne served onboard these ships during WWII.
Magne takes time ashore in New York.
